I sometimes watch mysteries with my mom and in one of them, the backstory was a set of awful gaybashing / curbstomping that took place in Australia in the early 1990s. (and they all escaped prosecution and most were in positions of power under a code of secrecy). It was a solid backdrop for a story. But those flashback scenes made me flinch as I’d forgotten just how rough and “buried under the rug” things were 25-30 years ago. I’d say the tides started turning around 1995 but prior to that it was a different world.
