I only ever supported one politician in my life so far and I have no regrets. There were various selling points of the man, Andrew Gillum, who was running for Gov of Florida in 2018 – but one of the biggest selling points to me was one thing he did as Mayor of Tallahassee was what he called the “Longest Table”. He brought together community leaders of all kinds, from small business owners to religious leaders to other community figures and talked things out.
Everybody had a voice at the table and they were frequent meetings discussion various issues.
With Florida’s Sunshine Laws, everything was public record of course.
I liked that way of thinking and that attitude. That was one of the big factors that convinced me to put aside my Independent status and register as a Democrat just so I could get him in in the 2018 primaries.
He almost won the state too, and did much better than I’d expected. Florida’s still purple despite political leadership showing otherwise.
