I mention that because RT’s purpose is to improve Russia’s image abroad.
It is to make Russia and its allies look good. It is not for the general consumption of native Russians in Russia; the TV programs are not available in the Russian language.
So it’s purpose is not an unvarnished view but of what view they wish to project. It’s more akin to “Voice of America”.
That’s not to say it’s evil awful or bad necessarily. But it’s public relations; as reliable as hearing a President speak from the White House or a company’s PR department making announcements
I loved RT for years. But something had shifted by end of 2016. They were telling America that they knew America better than they knew themselves and millions of Americans were starting to believe them.
The entire Fox Network did for a number of years; two personalities in particular still regurgitate RT articles the day after RT shows them and they’re regulars on Russian television as American voices that support Russian aims.
People who claimed to not like mainstream media gave an open pass to RT on almost everything, not a balanced shift but a changeover.
A number of youtube and twitter personalities, left, center and right, mirror RT positions on things regularly and continue complaining about mainstream media as if it was Trump 2016 still.
I’m not giving mainstream media a pass here. It deserves criticism. But at the extreme levels they’d been getting? No. Not unless all sources would get that same scrutiny ,and they rarely do.
I don’t have the discernment. They’re very good at getting into the American mind and it was when I was trying to find out “the truth” about Aleppo that not only did I realize it was impossible… I realized just how difficult teasing apart these differences really is, as each bias contains SO many subtleties.
They’re very effective. One of the reasons I had to stop using them is they understood the American mind too well and how we are very LITERAL about things; we believe anything that SOUND reasonable on the surface and they understand what reasonable American sounding arguments are like.
They serve the needs of the Kremlin in promoting a positive image of Russia; they are an asset to Russia because they directly help bring people to hold Russia in a positive light and their enemies in a negative light.
