I often struggle with chunking. I’ll typically look at category heads and what’s underneath them, and they just don’t ‘click’ with me. When they’re clearly segmented, such as being naturally nested (smaller inside bigger still), I can do it, but I typically struggle with abstract groupings. So I’m often trapped in the “bottom up” processing style. I’m always looking for odd new connections between concepts – a continual search for novelty I suppose – always afraid of closing a category prematurely lest a concept get fixed within it when it might apply to multiple or to another as yet undiscovered category. So what I tend to do instead is go by how I ‘feel’. I’ll look at concepts I need to know and ask myself lots of questions. How well can I distinguish this concept from other concepts? What does it remind me of? Is there a more concrete way to consider this concept? Is there an analog in some other field that might be more familiar to me that will help me hang onto this notion and be able to better compare it with other concepts in this section? It’s not a method I would ever suggest, even to someone I don’t like. It takes longer. But Working with “how it makes me feel” and “what does it seem like” – vague clusters like this, seems to help me hang onto the concepts long enough for a test — and incorporate them into my whole body of knowledge in _some_ ways. Perhaps that is why I go through all of that. [just noticing myself doing it—it’s not a path I decided on] – as it’s becoming part of how I think – another tool in a toolbox – maybe that’s why it takes me a little longer to figure out how it belongs in a grander way for me. I don’t know.
