I like that category idea “magical realist” and agree. While I remember thinking, “She doesn’t look like the doll” I could easily ignore that quickly because I then just accepted it. Suspension of disbelief was a success.

lol I almost forgot about that. Been so long. Yeah, everything that happened just made sense. They didn’t question it so I didn’t either. I also like how well Hughes did contrasts too. That kitchen was ugly even in 80s standards – moreso now. But the ugly boring house contrasted with the REALLY interesting stuff happening inside.

I didn’t have a “hot older woman’ thing when I was a teenager EXCEPT Kelly LaBrock in this movie. *I* thought she was like a hot 40 yr old in this movie – but I was like 13/14/15/16 when I saw it. But it was the hair and her accent – made her seem SO much more mature.

Looking back, she was probably in her 20s but they contrasted their immaturity and her worldliness, she seemed MUCH older than she was.
