I know it’s from a strange angle but the US military treating assignment surgery as the would any other treatment gives it a little weight. It’s easier, faster and cheaper to go through the process, which in total is just a few years than it is to ignore, endless therapy (from their perspective) or discharge well trained personnel for a treatable condition.
So it moved from a mental illness to a physical illness with a course of treatment and a tangible end goal.
While that doesn’t speak to the mistakes, it does speak to a pragmatic (time and money) side.
