I heard a click and the big machine powered down. My experiment in seeing in 3D

ok thanks all for explaining a little better. I think I might’ve seen a little of the effect but mentally blending the two was hard. Maybe it’s ’cause I don’t see in 3D, I dunno.

Once in the 90s, I read a book on how to improve your own vision. I was determined to see in 3D.

After a few months with this book, I went to a specialist on Long Island (all the way from NJ) test my 3D vision. There was a red dot and a green dot and they got closer and closer together.

Suddenly, the red dot and the green dot switched sides. I laughed out loud and said something “Hah, they switched sides!”

I heard a click and the big machine powered down.

“Stop messing with your eyes” he scolded me. “You don’t have enough 3D cells in your brain and they can’t fuse them into 3D. If you keep messing with your eyes trying to see in 3D, you’ll get double-visions and be unable to see the way you do now. Just stop.”

He seemed genuinely frustrated, probably because I came in all excited about this great “new way” to improve vision.. but it was really one of those “quack” books… although it *did* teach me to visualize a deeper and deeper shade of black.

It fascinates me because it _almost_ works for JUST a moment I think I can see something novel in the two faces when I look at the cross. The eyes get a tiny bit bigger, the faces a tiny bit cartoonish… but before it flips to the next image, they’re back to their normal selves again.

It’s like my brain WANTS to fuse them but it doesn’t know how.

Or maybe it does see them fused but quickly inhibits it. I don’t know.

ok thank you good. Now it’s working a bit. They fuse, I can see the distortion flash but now I get a “lurch” feeling” in my stomach that goes “No.”

But I can see the abstract art it makes in my head a little better.

So the refusal for my brain to see it at first is an inhibiting of some kind. Cool. If I accept the ‘lurch’ feeling in my stomach, then I can see them.

Yeah – I found instead of looking *at* the cross, I had to defocus entirely. THEN I could see the specialfx. I also have crappy vision.
