I have to think about that. I do believe in physical metaphors that don’t require standard linguistics – yet they do require conscious awareness, even in animals and babies. At their root metaphors are imperfect substitutions, taking a limited function of something and applying it where it normally wouldn’t and yet it works, like using the round end of a key for a quarter slot push. But that’s a generalization of metaphor
