i have a 1 3 y r old ne p hew so I’d made it my mission over the last few years to immerse myself in the various subcultures so I could be prepared for anything. He’s now talking a language unknown to his mother or teachers or even 1/2 the class but I understand most of it and can see what they see in it and laugh, although it’s through analysis and not from being raised in it.

I used to always be a year ahead of him but he’s now starting to surpass me, which is normal. Now I have to double check on occasion if something is racist or bullying or ironic and ‘just a meme” or if “just a meme” is STILL masked bullying or if it’s ok with the friend group.

It’s a fine line. But I had my “Truly Tasteless Jokes” books as a kid and liked ‘that’s so wrong’ humor at his age so I try to straddle the line between laughing with it and other times being avuncular and giving “grown up” talk stuff. It’s fun though and he’s a good kid.
