I grew up with a Claude Shannon view : that all is bits. I read his 1948 paper as a teenager and it transformed my brain. that said, it may be pixelated at the bottom or not but what’s missing from information theory is levels. Bottom up has been the way for a long time now, since 1850s. 18th century was human level. prior to 18th century it was top down. so with the bottom up particularly in the last 70 years, you have to construct reality because it’s all bits. but what if the bits self organize ? That’s when you get into the 1970s and beyond complexity theories, swarm, cellular automata, self organizing systems, Internet daemons and bots, etc. but I think it’s more than self organizing. we impress upon reality. Reality presses down and up upon us too. so instead of top down or bottom up… perhaps it’s middle out.

Reality presses down and up upon us too.

so instead of top down or bottom up…

perhaps it’s middle out.
