I grew up in New Jersey in the 80s so an image of a mom lighting up her boy’s cigarette didn’t look at odd as it’s probably supposed to. The link between “smoking” and “cool” is far from broken enough in the public mind for this to work as a metaphor except in very limited markets. It’s less obvious of a shocker than it ought to be.
