I got a number of ancestors that were early US colonists and some of them died in those cold winters (and clearly enough survived and thrived) It’s convenient to pull up something online but I could pull up family records too. It’s romantic to be frontiersman but it’s negligent to gloss over dangers if you’re aware of them, unless you’re doing a darwin’s law thing where holding back important knowledge increases your own chances of survival
