I dunno. I don’t always ‘buy’ just-so stories about evolutionary purposes/functions for things. They’re interesting brain food, but I take them with a grain of salt. There’s a lot of evolutionary psychology out there for example that’s pure crap speculation, so I approach evolutionary explanations with caution because it’s too easy to weave a plausible tale without any confirmed basis in reality… as we can only speculate about evolutionary purpose by viewing current behavior and projecting it backwards through time. I’m sure there’s some name for some fallacy that covers this but I just see it as a “direction to be cautious placing too much stock in”.
That said, good question!
