I don’t know about other groups but when I started Y-RIGHTS in 1990/91, I wasn’t sure whether to call it kids rights, teen rights, youth rights…it was hard to figure out what was good. I settled on Y-RIGHTS as it could stand for “Youth Rights” and “Y Rights” (Why Rights?) and described it as “rights of kids/teens”. Youth is a kind of “weak word” in that it’s sort of vague, but to use just “kids” or just “teens” was too specific, and I didn’t want to use “minors” because that didn’t seem like an empowering word.
