I do a similar thing: “What am I avoiding right now?” I ask again and again and take notes. When I reach a point where it gets painful to go any deeper, I stop. I now have a list of things I can do to successfully avoid the Thing I Cannot Bear To Face and feel pretty damn accomplished and move on with my life.
