I can’t be responsible for every or any story. But this story seems reasonable as I’ve known grown adults holding this notion although not usually up in their 70s. By then, unless your life is sheltered, you find out it’s an ignorant view.
Consider Trump’s lifestyle, how many occasions would he have had through his life to have dealings with people on welfare?

In any case, I don’t know what other people do. I know that I’ve known the guy since the 1980s and formed my opinion about him a long long long time ago. It hasn’t changed.
If I thought he was a moron in the early 1993 during the Indian casino trials, why would I think he’s intelligent in 2020?
You can talk about how other people misunderstand him or misquote him or malign, etc if you like. But I can only speak for my own position and why I hold it.
