I ate up all Joseph Campbell stuff as a kid and while I studied Hero’s Journey on my own and with my grandmother, who was really into it, I knew that I was not a hero. I was Obi-Wan Kenobi, not Luke. Gandalf, not Frodo or Bilbo. I’m the NPC the hero occasionally encounters as a guide and just as quickly isn’t seen again. I like that role. Commitments are deep but short in time and everybody including me gets to move on in their respective journey. Only accidental hero I related to was Neverending Story, first part. Up to that moment the boy had his psychotic break from reality and talks to the Princess.
