The main difference I can see from then and today in terms of social attitudes is there was always an underlying, “But you know we’re only joking here – you’re alright!”, which is sometimes missing in today’s climate, which tends to be much more polarized.
 
Still, most of the same kinds of jokes I heard then I still hear today except now it’s in memes and things and now is always attached to a political party or politician like Trump. But at that time, the comedy stood by itself for it’s own sake, no agenda except “hey let’s be shocking!” Was never meant to be taken seriously.
 
Otherwise not much different.
