How do you determine what you WANT?
You have to redesign the system NOT for the FUTURE but for RIGHT NOW.
Ask yourself, “What would you do RIGHT NOW if you do whatever you wanted to?” because if you DON’T KNOW what you would do if you could do whatever you wanted to, HOW can you know what you can do under CONSTRAINTS?
Dr. Russell Ackoff, Organizational Theorist
I saw a talk from him and while I’ve read and seen stuff about Systems Thinking, I never saw someone speak so plainly and clearly. “What’s the most important part of a car? The engine? The wheels? No. The most important part of a car is that it takes you from one place to another. An engine can’t do that. A wheel can’t do that.”
“What’s the most important part of the body? The heart? The brain? No. The most important part of the body is that it has life.”
I saw this talk just now that he gave years ago: never even HEARD of the guy before, but he’s famous in places I don’t go; he talked to CEOs of businesses and governments and militaries and stuff. He’s WAAAAY up there in the Practical Genius level to me.
