He’s not anti-establishment Alan. You don’t get rich being anti-establishment. He’s establishment that’s why he was allowed to get away with it for so long. What changed is he was a handy fall guy.
“Oh, he’s a maverick!”. How many times has someone been called that? Were they really? Not at all. Just spicy.
Here’s Roger Stone in 1999, talking about Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2000.
I don’t know what he says, just showing the connections for a long time.
The wool that got pulled over so many people’s eyes is believing “Trump is not a politician”. But he is and always was. Roger Stone has been working the political scene for decades, rooted and as firmly footed in Washington DC politics as anything.
What is politics? Connections. A maverick has no connections. These guys? All highly connected. Connections = politics.
“Mueller, Arrest Me”, said Roger Stone.
Ok, replied Robert Mueller.
Roger Stone was confident he’d be acquitted of all 7 charges.
He was found guilty of all 7 charges.
Will Trump pardon him? Doesn’t matter. That’s on Trump. Justice system did what it does for a change. Horse and pony show? In a way. Mostly symbolic? Sure. Still I’m glad.
That’s what GOP does though. It’s total GOP Establishment tactics. GOP=crass ever since Clinton impeachment, likely prior but definitely since. No class. NO surprise.
The Bush’s represented old GOP. Establishment GOP is Rush Limbaugh / Newt Gingrich onwards.
I’ve heard it referred to as the “howling wilderness of pseudo-conservatism”. That’s what’s establishment GOP now. The Bush era? Long long dead.
Not sure if the original is findable anymore but it’s an amazing essay and if I ever find a backup, I’ll share it.
guess I see them as an organic, structural part of Newt Gingrich’s establishment.
Newt Gingrich didn’t start it of course, but he certainly knew how to focus through the decades. The Gingrich GOP is not the Barbara Bush GOP.
