Here’s an example of “too little information”. [see my previous post on Shannon and information entropy]. Now it’s possible that other people may recognize my face in this picture, but I can’t. This has gone beyond the level of my ability to interpret as “Kenneth Udut’s face”. I can tell you that it’s a face : there’s enough information for that. But whatever cues are needed for me to see “me” looking back in this picture there’s not enough here. All I did was use various outlining tools to continue reducing information until I reached a point of “yes it’s a face, no it’s not me”. No matter how much I look at it, it’s no longer me. Yet, if I put a transparency of my face that I recognize under this everything matches up perfectly. Just, not enough by itself. I find that fascinating. Some landmarks are missing. I don’t know what they are, but they’re missing.
