he was against the abuses the public school system put on kids and advocated unschooling. he helped me see there was a way out – along with reading Summerhill – and so i applied for an essay contest to get a scholarship to get into a tiny private school for high school. it wasn’t the teach yourself oasis of Summerhill nor match John Holt’s somewhat extreme individualism but i knew the tiny classes were better for me and it was k-12. close enough.
