Har Christopher I was a young teenager when I did most of my readings of this stuff. I was obsessed by Summerhill and John Holt books when I was about 13 to 15 I pulled myself out of public school and found a little private k-12 school for high school, which was the closest I could get to a Summerhill. I had to write a couple of essays for a contest to get a full scholarship, and I got it. it wasn’t the progressive haven i wanted but it was kindergarten to 12th grade and I graduated with 12 kids in my class, and I felt like I did *something* to take control of my own education I will likely keep my “heyday of John Dewey fantasy” but I also believe that you are likely more correct than i.
