Our language lacks a lot of things which makes so many concepts difficult to express. It’s so cause-effect oriented, so action, kinetic, motion with all of the focus on the “dominance” – almost a colonialism of happenings. Yet what of the receivers, the readiers, the prepareds? This sentiment: ” If you love me, I’ll be in your heart. If you hate me, I’ll be in your thoughts. Either way, you’ll never forget me!” is indeed dark. Once upon a time, I’d have called it Satanic. It goes beyond moral relativism because it ENTIRELY lacks a conscience and instead is RESULT oriented. Like a salesman. In the old days, they’d barge in your door to sell a vacuum (way before my time). They’d dump dirt on the floor, vacuum it up ,and hang around and bully you until you brought it – usually housewives. Whatever it takes to make the sale. machiavellian “cunning, manipulative behavior, and a willingness to use deceit and exploitation to achieve goals, often at the expense of others” best to stay away from anybody talking about it, doing it, thinking about it, etc. It’s insidious and will rot your brain and sap whatever energies you might have.
I was aware of the book and I _did_ like one of the songs from Steppenwolf… but… …the real reason? …I got on the CB Radio from my home – I got into it at the tail end of the CB radio era when I was 15 or so – and I had my little antenna and my 12V battery converter… ..and I wanted to join in the people talking to other people. But you need a handle. Names I heard: White wolf. Red wolf. Dark Wolf. Black wolf. Light Wolf. Blue wolf… … …so many “wolf”s…. .. so I had no idea what to pick, so I liked “born to be wild” and someone gave me the book by Herman Hesse to read (I never did – kept meaning to) so I thought, “well, 3’s the charm. I’ll be “Steppenwolf”. So when chat rooms came up a year or two later, I just used the same name.
Oh gosh I didn’t realize there was discrimination for American folk artists. I guess my Art teachers were mostly the “counter” art teachers and made absolutely sure to include a lot of Folk Art because I can remember both in high school and college learning folk art of different cultures and them getting their due. Funny thing is, and maybe it’s a consequence of that, the only art I like seeing is the school art projects displayed at my local libraries. They have to work within whatever the constraints are of the art project and get some small measure of creativity. It’s their only showings and the schools try to pick the most “displayable”. So those are things I enjoy.
