It can be tricky. How fast is the earth moving through space? Is it moving at all? But that’s a perspective issue. What you’re talking about is sensible: granularity. In fact, we sort of do. Photon is the basic grain of reality. But they’re funny grains.
Public Relations was the new name for the US Propaganda Dept thanks to Edward Bernays who noticed that Propaganda had gotten a tainted name, back in the 1920s. Think of that every time you hear something from the White House or from a Corporation making an announcement or from the leader of a foreign government.
Clarity or ambiguity aren’t absolute in storytelling because literature is a participative process. Looking up the etymology of the word “literature” I find interesting things: _Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the utmost possible degree. [Ezra Pound, “ABC of Reading”]_ which sheds some light. Interestingly, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literariness focuses on form such as meter and rhythm to distinguish between literary and non-literary texts. So from a point of view of literariness, the distinction between literature and non-literature would be amoral, which is contradiction to Ezra Pound’s view of what Great literature is.
I tend towards a compromise/middle ground though. I too have struggled with situations that don’t have true opposites but only appear to. Getting through the apparition to see the fallacy isn’t always easy though. A lot of endless battles between “supposed opposites” aren’t opposites at all. American politics: Republican vs Democrat. Polar opposites? A scale? No. They’re not opposites. But behaving “as if” they are opposite is a never ending source of battles.
The reason the compromise position is not always correct is this: The two things are not opposites in a way that works with a percentages. For example: What percent pregnant are you? What is the middle ground? Can we compromise so that we are each half pregnant? It’s in those cases that it’s a fallacy. What can be tricky is recognizing that the two things presented “as if” opposites on a spectrum are not actually on a spectrum and they might not even be opposites! Pro-life and pro-choice is an example of issues that are not opposites of each other but only seem to be.
