Growing up, went to the Methodist church in town in NJ – only had two churches – a Catholic and a Methodist. 1 sq mile suburb. The pastor was a true believer; really sweet guy. Very naive about the world, very “be nice and good” and would gently criticize the congregation now and again when needed. Maybe his early 60s at the time. One day he decided he’d run for political office, to “make a difference” in politics too. There were 5 borough members. He won one of the seats and he participated for a year. He said nothing of his experience during that time. but once it was over a year later, he was a broken man. He would mention it in comments about men who seem good can perpetrate evil, negate things to say about politics and politicians, oh you could see he was just not the same man afterwards. The naive happy-go-lucky pastor stared into the evil in men’s hearts and seeing his change made an impression on me about the wickedness of power and what it can do.
