Gotta give credit to the Byzantines without whom the Greek knowledge would be lost and the Islamic scholars wouldn’t have had anything to work with.
Modern BBC tellings of history like to paint the Byzantine empire as pretty useless in order to continue their mythology of ‘dark/middle’ ages that they were wrong about…. but really the Byzantine “status quo” kept the knowledge alive and learning contnuing throughout the Eastern Roman Empire while Europe was just crap.
The Islamic scholars – their culture and the Byzantine culture were mixed together, each separate of course but very cosmopolitan.
Not that they didn’t have battles and wars because they did. But not the annoying mosquitoes of the Crusades from the Latin West.
It’s only the fall of Constantiple where things really went to crap and started the whole humanistic stuff that we pride ourselves on.
If that dude from Constantiple didn’t bring those books over for the hungry students in Italy at the otherwise failed council of Florence, who knows what the world would be like today.
