We’re still ‘hooked on’ string theory in the USA. It’s not that it’s a bad theory ’cause it’s not… but it’s taking away from pragmatic engineering projects that can go somewhere. I guess we want to ‘crack the code’ first… or perhaps it’s the encryption algorithms some of the more complicated maths can help with (even a ‘wrong’ string theory can be perfectly right as an encryption or code-cracking method).
Anyway, that’s just speculation on my part. Comes down to $. Damn shame.
