“Ethnic Groups” from my Boy Scout Handbook (1979-1990 edition). As this is from the BSA (Boy Scouts of America), its target group is boys in the BSA in America. There’s a lot it doesn’t say. “It doesn’t matter.” covers up a lot of things. But even as a kid, where it said, “we benefit from”, I didn’t feel as if it was speaking only to whatever ethnic groups I might have considered myself from, in an “us vs them” way but rather that it was the combined contributions that make up a melting pot of America. Melting-pot as a metaphor was ‘the thing’ at the time, America as an amalgam.
