We’ve had a Chinese Timelord *way* back in like 1973. He got sick and tired of hanging out on Gallifrey and left for Earth to become a Buddhist monk who has lived for many thousands of years, the reincarnations being his regenerations. Brilliant concept that I hope they return to someday.

Doesn’t matter with Doctor Who. Other shows? Maybe.

===

It was. But sometimes people forget that it’s all media, all manipulating our opinons, coming from all political directions. Keeping a clear head amongst it all isn’t easy and likely impossible. Still, I keep at it.

===

I was comparing it to an old American show, Voyagers! that ran for one season about a time traveling man who picks up a boy and they travel together. It was actually a very good show that got cancelled for the stupidest reason.

You raise points that I’ll consider valid. You’re there. You know the show. You know the current situation in 2017 with British TV. I don’t.

That said, in the USA, we’ve had strong female characters that worked fine as role models for boys too. I don’t know if you guys ever had that.

=====

That’s fair. From my perspective, I’m not always a fan of what the BBC does to things sometimes.

What they do to history is downright appalling at times. They’ll take an obscure professor with a radical opinion about history and start making dramatic shows about “EVERYTHING YOU KNEW ABOUT [X] WAS WRONG” just for a ratings bump. That’s annoying and misleading to history.

I’m glad for the disclosure. As a current fan, longtime, it’s just something I’ve been expecting for a while.

The change is weird isn’t it? For me, I wanted to hate him – and I did at first – and kept looking for everything wrong with him. (Colin Baker) Then one day he’d do something familiar and I’d be like, “Stupid stupid stupid, of course it’s the same person just new face and personality…. that’s the point isn’t it?” and I got over it.

====

Were actual boys upset or just Peter :) He *does* have two boys – or is that grandkids? So maybe.

====

Oh he was SO ANGRY. I expected him to start vandelizing everything. Reminded of british thugs who set fire to buildings and things. Such a new personality to come out. Yeah, I fell in love with his Doctor and was sad to see it go so soon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgxPnRaX7X0 Was it this one? I made a remix of the song when I heard it. Loved the theme. Didn’t see the show though. My mother’s obsessed with British stuff – the stuff we get anyway. She’s likes the mysteries not so much the drama.

====

Most TV is shit though wherever you go. I stopped watching almost all TV about 4 years ago. 250 channels of nothing interesting. I’ll watch Doctor Who (I’m a fan) but nothing else grabbed in interest. I liked our Science channel at that time but one day, it just started pandering to the new atheist group constantly and it was annoying so I stopped watching.

====

Thing is, the Doctor regenerates. One thing I know as a fan, if I don’t like a Doctor, I just have to wait.

====

My mother subscribes to “Acorn TV” on her Roku streamer. They hand pick certain shows and she likes what they pick.

We don’t see most British programming, just the better stuff that makes it over here.

====

If you’re seeing it over there from America, you’re getting our better stuff. We have lots of crap. Too many channels to fill without much content.

====

Precisely. Besides, I think this is calculated buzz. If you get enough people to hate the new idea, they’ll watch BECAUSE they want to see her fail. Then… they’ll get hooked. New viewers.

====

Just go to Doctor Who TARDISposting and other places where they specifically rip apart everything Doctor Who in very specific ways. [current theme is a Nardole love/hate shit memes]. There’s a lot of saltiness there over Jodie Whittaker and it’s not ironic. It’s a lot of fun there actually.

It was afterwards. Some people are looking for reasons to not like her. Same thing happened with Clara. Same thing happened with Bill. I think Missy was in the clear because she was absolutely fantastically perfectly over the top for the part.

====

They are. But people that don’t even watch the show much or at all are inserting their politics into the show by complaining that the new Doctor is a woman.

That’s what’s new.

====

Of course. But when haven’t they? It’s always been progressive, even way back in the 60s.

=====

Rebels fighting groupthink. Lots of stand-ins for Nazis in Doctor Who.

===

I found an old article from 2012: Even way back in 2012, people were saying that Doctor Who is being taken over by leftists. But this goes back with a few examples of where Doctor Who has always been progressive, anti-conservative.

====

This is an interesting article, partly because I don’t understand much of British politics but enough to make sense of it. Strange how it’s English yet so much sounds foreign to me :)

But this makes sense:

“While the left might point to the Doctor as a sort of galactic Che Guevara, overthrowing dictatorships all over the universe, it could equally be argued that in many ways his behaviour mirrors that of the right-wing neo-cons over the last few years. The Doctor might well overthrow governments, but he rarely, if ever, sticks around to see how the societies rebuild themselves after his intervention. In some cases he doesn’t even bother to find out if the planets citizens want to be liberated in the first place”

====

Last line of the article sums it up nicely: basically, that it’s a children’s TV show and…
“. If the show promotes anything, it’s tolerance, diversity, intellectual curiosity and a willingness to keep an open mind. If those aren’t good lessons for children, I don’t know what is.”

===

Yes. It’s taking the power away from its usage in that button by applying it to a situation those who would use that button would be annoyed by.
