Diplomacy. I’ll occasionally compromise on diplomacy by being hard-nosed and unyielding instead.
Ultimately, prioritizing seems to be the key – having it built into the system.
There’s a code-of-ethics for nursing which is pretty amazing. I should find it again but it’s a great balance of “do the right thing” and “pragmatism” .

That’s precisely how I am. I save it for when it matters. “Speak softly and carry a big stick” but without a stick, basically.

Example: There’s always family kids around here. I’m a nice guy, kids hover, it’s annoying but tolerable.
I’ll put up with a lot. Kids need room for stupidity, especially when most adults in their lives are noisy and strict about the littlest things.
But, there’s a few things I don’t stand and that’s when the bear comes out. My voice gets growly and deep and I can make a kid’s face go white and they won’t come back out here for a week or more.
But the thing I yell at them about? Never happens again and I go back to being a principled non-asshole.
