DARPA is going to be funding research on precisely this. There’s currently a call for bids on an artificial intelligence that is capable of reasoning about time in the correct way, which is this way. Each object has a birth life and death and pace and its own reasoning/logic about time and event. Events are also objects. You can’t simply add up when you’re reasoning about time and objects and events. Things feed into other things, there are contingencies for each object’s array of possible events that it may cause respond to. This human like ability to be able to respond appropriately given the time constraints that are unique in that moment are difficult for humans to do and impossible for computers right now. I may never see the results of the DARPA project. But I am pleased that my view of time is being validated by something with possible significance at greater scales than I’m used to. DARPA was behind part of what became the first Internet.
