Taught nephew chess at 5 1/2-6. Picked up rules quickly. Beat me a few times but I was never great at the game. He created his own rules more often than playing the original which was hard for me to keep up with at times – but I felt the ability to create your own rules to be far more useful than following a set of restrictions created by another. We haven’t played in a couple of years – but he’s a gamer (age 12 now) – bona fide, he’s going to beat whatever he starts, yet he recognizes when he’s getting obsessed with a game and moves on to another. I never had a problem with that but his family never liked him getting obsessed over one particular game for too long, so he learned to master them quickly, at least to high intermediate level.
