Causality, Causal Thinking [What do I want?] vs Effectual Thinking [what can I do?]

Ok. According to an analysis of my writings done by ACT-DL, I talk about #causation an awful lot. 913 of my writings involve causation, at a “certainly” level average of “0.11”.   That 0.11 might be low, if it wasn’t for the fact I seem to talk about it a lot.

Anyhow, I looked into it.  What is causation?  Why would this little Library AI tool from a Canadian library think I talk about it a lot?

Well, I listened to this 3 minute video on “Causal Thinking vs Effectual Thinking”.

And yes, yes and yes.  I’ve been writing about this forever and had no idea until just now that it was called “Causal Thinking” and “Effectual Thinking”.  [Goals vs Using-What-You-Have-At-Hand].

#mindblown for me.  I’ve taken it to an extreme – the future you can talk to the past you and let it know what it needs to do. [goals!? Never thought of it as goalsor – ‘causal thinking’]… and “look at your arms.  How far do they reach?  Maybe everything you need is right here in front of you all along”… this is how I would talk.  That’s called “Effectual Thinking”.

I didn’t know that.  I had no idea it had names.  Now I do.

I can’t tell you the relief this is for me.  It just is.  I no longer have to think, “I HAVE THIS GREAT NEW IDEA THAT I HAVE TO SHARE WITH THE WORLD!”.  It’s not new at all… just new to me, and I’ve enjoyed putting it together in various poetic and descriptive ways.

I’ll continue to.  But at lest I know I’m not alone.  Not at all.  I just didn’t see the connection ’til now.
