Bigotry? In middle school, kids would try to one-up each other in ruder and ruder jokes, just like today. I think my first encounter with bigotry was when their jokes passed where I was comfortable laughing at but it really sunk in when some were quite serious and not joking at all.
Nowadays they call it “ironic” vs “unironic”.
Oh hang on – that’s xenophobia.
Bigotry as intolerance of opinion? I was always considered a “weirdo” so I was accustomed to being misunderstood It was my personal challenge to convince another to understand me. I got good at it but not always. But I didn’t consider that bigotry on their parts.
Yeah. Like, I don’t fault people for holding different perspectives but I’ll fault not listening — unless what they don’t want to hear is vitrol and hate against them, as no one needs to hear that stuff.
If it’s racial/ethnic bigotry, I can’t say I ever experienced it as having gotten it in my direction. Have I ever been bigoted? Unknowingly? Likely. Implicit bias can be expressed as bigotry unknowingly. Learning is the fix and there’s always more to be learned.
I think some things are real. In a way, it all is. But the narratives can be near but not quite or really off in fantasy. Not sure if we can “touch truth” in a way that can be described well, but I think we can come sort of close.
Assholes come in all sorts of colors and shapes but the straight white man asshole is a particular intersection. Wealthy straight white man asshole is a level up. There’s all degrees of asshole.
I don’t feel victimized or attacked when straight white male is a synonym for asshole because I don’t identify as a straight white male asshole.
It’s not hard to see yourself as not a victim.
Oh, I think it’s all about commonality of agreements. Billions of tiny agreements. Most of our arguments are usually on just a few.
