[before I studied internet philosophers and then the alt right and after studying the bronies, i studied the furries and the name telephone sounds familiar]

Oh I know
🙂 I studied them separately when I realized that they were entirely different subcultures.
I made a lot of brony friends in 2011/2012 and watched the subculture age downwards until kids of other friends were putting up confession videos on Youtube proudly proclaiming that they were bronies and not ashamed. That’s when I knew they’d made it as a stable subculture.
Towards the end of my interest I saw some crossover and old ideas I had that furries were all about yiff and stuff started to go away as i began to make friends in the furry fandom.
I watched the same progression, aging downwards until by 2014 I started seeing kids on social networks proudly showing off their ears, or coming out to their parents as lupine and such. So, that’s when I knew that the furries had come of age as a long stable subculture.
I don’t know where I get my criteria from; just trends I notice through time.
