Been watching since 1980 (I was 8) and I always considered any gendered/sexed Time Lord to be a Time Lord, even if there’s occasional deviations from it now and again.
They’re a class in the society so it’s sort of like a title but their high technology to harness time travel fundamentally changed them as a species compared to _other_ Gallifreyians, who are not Time Lords. There are also Time Lords who are not Gallifreyians.
Think “Time Machine” story. Millions of years in the future, two classes of humans but they seems SO DIFFERENT because one lived underground the other in high tech environments. Each human but the differences are so marked that they’re basically different species altogether. It’s kind of like that but more.
It’s a title but also a species after the fundamental changes to themselves from harnessing time travel and changing their bodies.
So it’s tricky territory.
Not all Time Lords are Gallifrayian. River Song for example and there have been others. It’s a generality but not an absolute
River Song was a Time Lord who was not Gallifreyian and yet also did not hold a title as far as I know. So with her, Time Lord is a species.
If she has characteristics of a Time Lord, then Time Lord is at least partially a species as well as a titled society
She has Time Lord DNA. How could Time Lord DNA not be separate from a generic Gallifreyian DNA ? This makes Time Lord a species because they have different DNA.
She didn’t become like a homely Gallifreyian.
She’s also generally considered to simply be a Time Lord. If you have some Time Lord DNA in you, you’re a Time Lord. It’s really that simple.
Oh Highlanders are definitely renegade Timelords. That’s the ONLY thing that kept me watching the show… during the dark days of no Dr Wh
Both Missy and the Rani are not strong examples of Gallifreyian society though. Both were renegades, turned their backs on their people. The Rani was even worse in some ways than Missy in that regard. But Missy being the Master, was a chronic liar – and she was one of the best at it. So was she REALLY a “Timelady” or pulling our legs? No way to know. Her character was untrustworthy.
Maaaybe… we’ll never know. There’s a name in TV Tropes for this kind of character. I think it’s called Untrustworthy or Not-Credible or something like that. I’ll have to look her up and see what it says. I’m sure she’s on the list.
