First time I noticed that a stress pattern was similar to a mandelbrot and that pressure stress in a 2D object (ok – flat) comes from the 3rd dimension downwards I understood that mandelbrots get their weird patterns because they’re mathematical descriptions of high dimensional pressures, which explains their fracturing patterns that extend deeper and deeper mathematically…

 

..or maybe they just look the same. I still like it.
