It appeals to me because this way of thinking can get annoying : everything is “just” this, everything is “just” that
And I’ve engaged in that way of talking too
And yet despite disparaging remarks like that, these fields continue to exist and thrive distinctly from each other
Each of them have their zones of overlap which I think is fascinating
You pointed out some of the overlap between quantum chemistry for example
And yet in the bulk of each of their fields, there’s not much interaction between different fields
I find it absolutely fascinating that they are speaking all completely different languages from each other about the same time there’s this belief that they just merge into each other
But they really don’t
You can’t turn chemistry into quantum physics
You can’t turn sociology into psychology
There are distinctions that go beyond the words that are used and their definitions
They each have a different theoretical basis altogether
And I love that
The road of “it’s just” can end with mathematics or logic or can end with voice boxes uttering or DNA or photons —
But I do have my common substrate that I end with
But unfortunately my substrate is abstract
