Sustained physiological torture is more than locked in prison. Locked in prison isn’t functionally much different going to school or a socially active workplace.
If you repeatedly beat a dog does it learn to comply, get learned helplessness or does it start biting the handlers and become entirely unmanageable?
Any of the three is possible depending on HOW the beating happens and the predisposition of the dog.
But all of them can be brought to learned helplessness under sufficient sustained strain.
Of note: learned helplessness is not found in nature.
