Kids humor today is very dark as a coping mechanism. They laugh at the unlaughable as that’s all they CAN do to get through it.
Reminds me of the dark sarcasm I grew up with in the 80s but darker. We had The Bomb waiting to blow us away. Theirs is more intimate – it could be a classmate or, “Am I the next shooter?”
Informally among parents I know, 4th grade is about the time kids start trying to figure out who the school shooter will be in their class.
Ask any US kid. They’ll tell you. It’s a game played in all 50 states.
School shooting drills don’t help much either and “looking for mental illness” is looking in the wrong places as most mental illness isn’t violent.
Being vigilant for credible threats can help but a tattle-tail environment only goes so far as the cone of silence of kids vs adults runs deep. What have we done to engender their trust in us?
Thoughts and prayers? I don’t know the answers but we’re going about it in all the wrong ways.
