I think it works because packing tape glue is *probably* a clarified Pine Sap – or something similar.

Waterproof.

Your fingers don’t have to touch the glue part that much, because what separates the paper from the tape is that the paper is dissolving in the water. But the tape doesn’t dissolve in the water and the ink that transferred is safe in the Pine Sap now.
