guilty indulgence in japanese… Star Blazers or Space Battleship Yamato was something I saw as a kid on an off channel throughout the summer of one particular year. The story was amazing to young ken and had the most amazing music… no idea it was a huge phenomenon in Japan for long before then, equivalent to Star Wars in the USA but maybe more…

A lot of these won’t mean anything to most people who might see this, but this song from Star Blazers / Space Battleship Yamato called “The Infinite Universe”, got burned into me when I was little and never left. It would play whenever they would remember Earth as it used to be, before it was destroyed, or when they considered the incredibly long journey they had ahead of them (which took a very long time…. watching the show as a kid it seemed they’d NEVER get to Iscandar.

One particular scene, the ship got one last view of Earth but not in its destroyed state, but as it was *before* the destruction, as the ship had gone faster than the time it took light to get there, and so they were looking at the last life of an already dead planet from far away.

As a kid, the idea of overtaking light itself and seeing backwards in time was mindblowing and the deep emotions they pull out of you were almost unbearable. You could feel the longing for the impossible and the wisp of hope for the unlikely event of success that you were almost certain would not be.

ok… now it’s really strange that I tripped over Star Blazers / Yamato | I had *no idea* they came out with a new one just a few days ago in Japan? I guess it’s Yamato 2202 ? Anyway, it’s a continuation of the storyline I think.

I’m used to coincidences at one level – at the same time, it’s a creepy + awesome feeling at the same time.

I mentioned earlier today (or yesterday?) about not wanting to get hooked on things because it ‘sticks’ when I do too much? Well this is one of them. Star Blazers / Yamato. Saw it as a kid. Didn’t follow it through the years much, but I would occasionally. Now I find out they made another one that I *think* got released three days ago in Japan? I can’t tell yet.

Anyway, it’s just a strange/interesting feeling to forget about something for a long time and find out that just when you take a look back, someone has been bringing it forward at the same time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQjKbQMyiL8 Yeah – 2/25/2017… had no idea they were even working on one. Strange thing is, I’m familiar enough with the storyline from way back when that I don’t think I’d need English to understand it. They used the SAME retro cartoon style from way back when (with slight upgrades) so I’d recognize everybody.

映画劇場版 宇宙戦艦ヤマト復活編

I think I figured it out. There’s a _new_ Star Blazers series! Looks like this is the first episode, released just three days ago. I think it is… anyway what’s awesome about this to me is: I haven’t been following the fandom and had no idea about this coming yet here it is.

What’s great about this is that you don’t need to know what they’re saying to know what’s going on. [war and heavy emotions are very readable].

It’s in the same basic style as the one from 30 years ago with a few updates. It’s awesome to suddenly find myself back into something I thought was long past.
