[and I rooted for minix anyway]

Believe it or not, I’ve never run a Linux installation. I’m on Win7. Before that? Win2k Pro. I could see even back when it was linux vs minix there was a danger of me getting hooked. [and I rooted for minix anyway]

Oh yes – I think I have one or another *nix type installation on VirtualBox (or that other one – I forget which I have). I get an inkling to mess around from time to time and load it up. [my favorite virtual installation is a Win98 because it’s genuine and I get to see what a Win98 computer can and can’t do in today’s online]

I think I have BSD Unix on there as well.. I’ll have to check.

Ah! VMWare. That’s what I use. [I keep it on an external hard drive because some of the OS images are big… and that hd is sitting in a drawer in my bedroom right now.

====

I keep a minimal system and max it out without upgrading. Keeps me humble. Forces me to do a lot with a little and keeps me in touch with regular people who have regular computer problems [’cause I’m always ‘the guy’] – and if I have a whiz-bang set up, I’m afraid I’d lose touch.

That and I’m cheap. This 4 yr old $400 laptop has done amazing things for me.

====

I’ve emulated way back to a few IBM mainframes. I have some CP/M emulators, Apple ][, C64. My latest is xroar again for the Tandy Color Computer 2 (my first computer). I go into DOSbox every few months to do something I can’t do on my 64 bit system.

I thought about putting a Win 3.0 / 3.1 / 3.11 on DOXbox – I’m sure it would work. That’d be small enough.

=====

I remember when 3.11 came out. Seemed way too fancy compared to 3.0.

===

But I didn’t root for Windows at the time. I rooted for Deskmate. [from Tandy / Radio Shack]. Came with my computer and I loved it. I even tried to create a Usenet newsgroup about it…. and after people weren’t acting fast enough I “oops” sent a “CREATE newsgroup” CONTROL msg [after I learned how], so that it was created.

11/27/1994. lol – so much old stuff is still findable.

=—-

I do. I rooted for them over Windows as well. And… oh what was that beautiful system? Only got to play with it two or three time? NeXT? Yeah, NeXTStep I think.

Oh it wasn’t a waste, for sure. But if i remember right, you could control anything in the system on it.

I *think* I remember emulating it once in VMware… and finding it _very_ strange to work with. I felt like I was deep in the bowels of the system with every move I made. Felt too powerful.

I’m still waiting for a *decent* immersive 3D GUI. I don’t really have the equipment for it (but nowadays it’s easy enough to get/make) – but prototypes I’ve seen so far are disappointing.

I always envisioned something like Minecraft but most of the ones I’ve seen have you floating in mid air with crap everywhere, like you’re in space. Seemed ridiculous.

Oh THAT’S Mach! [just read it] – never knew what it was called but I remember there was a killer replacement for Unix that didn’t seem to get far.. but I was in a different computing world so I only 1/2 noticed.

I like typing. I didn’t want to upgrade to flat-screen phones right away. I kept my Blackberry for an extra year because of its marvelous keyboard.

But once I got my iPhone 4s that was it. I have the 5s now. Don’t want to let go of it. First system I don’t bother hacking at all. I just use it. Nice change for me.

====

Voice control along with immersive is gimmicky for everyday use right now.

I’m glad they’ve made progress. I use voice-to-text on my iPhone regularly as it works very well. But controlling it with my voice just isn’t my thing.

Recursion got lost somewhere in the early-mid 1990s, sadly, as did that quirky programmer humor.

It pops up now and again but it had its own unique flavor to it.

====

Mindsets have shifted from recursions into nets. Widely spread, thin nets.

Some nets are hooked into other nets, but usually they form meshs over ‘something’.

Structure including structural recursion seems to be a mindset that there’s less of these days. Perhaps it’s an exchange for the larger amount of people using these systems. Still though it’d nice to get some depth.

One to many relationship in the [morris, spagphetti code] set. Never worked on Honeywell mainframes.

ah – i should’ve used more local search parameters for that reerence 🙂 [ie – asked you 😛 – smaller network here].

====

Same. Funny we use that same terminology for it. “people collecting”. I once said to the wrong person, “I like collecting people that are interesting”. The response was something like, “WHAT DO YOU DO? COOK AND EAT THEM?!?”

I think I had a strange profile pic then too.

===

I’m sorry about your brother 🙁 but honored that I can fulfill at least some of the function in some small ay.

===

I have a few people I’m like that with as well. They get a little extra, where I might be a little quicker at dropping what I’m doing. I used to try that with everybody but found I couldn’t. I guess everybody with a caretaking way learns that one.

====

I’m glad. I’ve kept 1/2 an eye myself and noticed situations brew quickly at times but while I can step in with some people successfully, some less so.

====

I’m Mr Peace + Love “Summer Camp Counselor” personality. I can make peace in many situations but I can’t do guard dog duties very well.

===

For me it’s more basic personality. For example I can spent hours with “Billy the Troll” and will debate them on whatever with an eye towards finding the “good person deep down inside”. [camp counsellor mode].

I don’t let them know. But my goal is to get a ‘like’ from them and then I know all is well.

But if someone’s just being a flippant asshole bullying, I find a few words to get them to go away.

If you just disappear to join them it’s cool. I feel like we just had a “Council of net Elders” conversation. No need for ‘hi’ or ‘bye’ is one of the best things about the nature of this medium.
