Indeed – I’ve seen a few good ones through the years. Back in ’93, a guy on a Usenet forum outlined this elaborate Warp Drive thing, complete with formulas – I think he later made his PhD on it and got NASA working on it now.
All from discussions like the ones we’re having here right now in 2015.

My rule of thumb is talk to as many people as I can about whatever is interesting to them (or me); find the fanbases of fiction and the fanbases of the sciences and read the flow that goes by, and see what clicks.

I look forward to better AI that can go through streams of Internet writings and pick out novel correlations that don’t exist yet and can then compare to see if it’s plausible.
