after my mother’s last computer got wrecked with cryptolocker 2 about 10 years ago, i learned to expect anything. I was able to get it back and running again, crippled, with none of her old files but thankfully I had a year previous backup which was close enough for her stuff and the poor computer hobbled along until one day she just got another computer, I tossed the HD and ended up reusing an old DISH network DVR HDD and making it work with Win10. It didn’t want to; I forget what weird thing they did to try to cripple it – but I got it going and that computer was a good enough kids computer ’til the CMOS just couldn’t anymore. No battery changes would let it keep its settings.
