Abstraction is inevitable. Every field has its own ontology – hell, every person does. And we share words. And this leads to confusion, particularly translations but even twins can miscommunicate. To me, semiotics is a nice old way of doing layers of abstraction from an original – and that yes it’s possible we’ll never know what a ground truth really is.
