« I’m not deflecting anything. What is the nature of a government? What does it do? What metaphors function in place of a government? That can be tricky as government is a nominalization of a verb: TO GOVERN. Government governs. Act of governing. So where does this action of governing take place? On a plot of land with people and things on it. SO now we have a circumscribed place with an act (“governing”) taking place with people and things involved. What metaphor covers all that? A house. A family. Mom, Dad, kids, pets, stuff. Is it a good metaphor? I don’t know. But nation as house, leader as mommy or daddy, the people as kids, the economy as bank account, is SO commonly in use that it acts “as if” true already. Look at the budget. People talk about the budget as if it’s a bank account for their home. But it’s not. It’s entirely different, functions differently. But the metaphor of nation=house, leader = mom/dad is so strong, that even the smartest economists fall in that metaphorical trap and can’t get out of it.

I don’t see what you see. I see a continuation of the founding fathers’ vision, the vision of the enlightenment. Mine is the world of Walden Pond, sea-to-shining-sea and yeah, a bit of “why can’t we work for peace on earth? Why can’t we try to eliminate common problems facing humanity like poverty and hunger?” and I don’t expect everybody to get along or agree- that’s part of what diversity is all about.
More Retrosplenial Cortex stuff. Fascinating to me: Atrophied Retrosplenial Cortex is found in Alzheimer’s Patients but not Dementia. This is fascinating. See, the Retrosplenial Cortex I’m learning holds onto what’s FAMILIAR to you. Places you recognize. Objects you recognize. People you recognize. If the “familiarity circuit” is damaged, everything’s new. Everybody’s new. And lack of familiarity is scary, particularly if you now lack the ability to form familiarity. A substitute Retrosplenial Cortex would solve it. A memory chip of familiarity. But we’re far from that. But someday they’ll figure it out.
People go where the people are. China has the biggest social networking platforms. Facebook has captured family connections which is where all the others fail. You can always find a place to join your friends. But find a place where your extended family is. The place that conquers family will win.
