If teachers are paid enough to have a basic, US middle class income, the hope is that stability, that example they’ll set for the kids they teach, will help instill a middle class mindset (at least) in the students. I actually just learned that the other day, and I’m impressed at that foresight from many decades ago. If you teach from poverty, you create poverty as a norm. If you teach from a standard, you create and instill standards. I don’t know why I didn’t notice it before – and while part of it is almost a little creepy, really it’s not such a bad idea. Ultimately, I’m an individualist but even with that, I suppose I too expect some basic humanism-type ideals to be in people’s thinking.
